Hi there, I’m Allyson!
It’s hard to summarize the journey and evolution of Sparrow’s House, LLC into a short and sweet narrative that will hold your attention,
but I’ll try:
I have always been crafty and entrepreneurially. As a kid, I was always into something crafty (making friendship bracelets, decoupaging keepsakes, sewing, etc) and dabbled in sales (ex: selling said friendship bracelets on the black market of the recess playground). This penchant for creating and selling stuck with me into adulthood and slowly morphed into woodwork and design. I began Sparrow’s House Crafts in 2017 simply making small wooden signs and vinyl-clad apparel and accessories. In 2018, I needed a dresser with very specific dimensions for my guest room. I searched and couldn’t find anything online or in stores so I figured I would simply build one. And then I built nightstands. And then refinished several furniture pieces. And after I realized I have a knack for this thing, I morphed the “business” into Sparrow’s House Woodwork in 2019. At first, I mostly made goods for vendor markets, friends, and my own home, but eventually, I quit my job as a public school teacher and turned this little side gig into my full-time job.
When I left teaching, I thought I would just continue to create small tchotchkes, signs, and home decor, but then I received my first commissioned order for a piece of furniture that paved the way for what Sparrow’s House is today. I continued building furniture and cabinetry, began installing wall treatments, and spent more and more time on my scroll saw creating custom 3D wood art. I have dabbled in a wide range of projects, but I’m finding I most love projects that transform an entire space- wall treatments, built-ins, cabinetry, etc.
I know I’m not the only person around who is doing what I’m doing. But what sets me apart is my attention to detail and ambition to please. I love seeing the reactions from my clients when they see their completed space, furniture piece, or custom sign and I strive to make my clients happy.
I believe that your home deserves to be as special and distinctive as you are. There’s no need to settle for the mass-produced items you find at the big box or home stores when I can build custom pieces to fit your specific needs and wants. Let me help you transform your space into exactly what you’re looking for. I’d love to chat with you- contact me here!
Sparrow's Story
She loves food and the sun, her people and her Frenchie; she is fierce and does what she wants; she doesn’t like being told what to do and she will always test boundaries. Sparrow is the namesake and mascot of this business, and we’re lucky she lets us be part of her world.
Prior to Sparrow, I was not a cat person. From a young age, it was ingrained in me that the only good cat is a... well, you know the rest. Frankly, I would still consider myself a dog person, but cats are now a pretty close second.
One day in 2011, I was on a walk with my mother-in-law on a paved path with a wooded area to my left, separated only by a chain-link fence. As I enjoyed the sunshine and fresh air, I suddenly began to hear little mewmews. I paused, looked around, and a little baby kitty jumped out of a tree! As I approached the fence she began timidly walking toward me. Making cat calls was not enough to lure her over, so I poured a bit of water into the lid of my bottle and enticed her with a fresh drink. I noticed an opening at the base of the fence and once she was close enough, I gently scooped my hand around her tiny body and pulled her through the narrow escape. Immediately it was apparent something was wrong with her left eye. I rushed her to the vet, thinking I would simply drop her off. Surely they would take pity on this pathetic creature, fix her up and then find her a home- certainly I was not keeping a cat. However, I was left with a choice: pay for surgery to remove her left eye, or have her euthanized. Even though I was not a cat lover, I was an animal lover and there was no way I would let them kill her. We sought a second opinion and they offered to perform the necessary surgery as a teaching opportunity and only charge for supplies. Done and done and the rest is history.
The name Sparrow comes from the 1905 hymn, His Eye is on the Sparrow. That song, and the scripture it references, is a reminder that God is in control and if He cares enough about the birds in the trees, He will always care about me.
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" Matthew 6:26
